The Diamond

A diamond is defined as a precious stone consisting of a clear and colorless crystalline form of pure carbon, the hardest naturally occurring substance. It not only looks awesome, but it is a rare mineral that costs a lot of money based on its value.

When I think about the value of diamonds it also causes me to think what makes me valuable as a person. What better place to look than the biblical character who questioned his value a lot; King David. This is what he writes in regards to how valuable we are in the eyes of our creator:

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.” (Psalm 139:13-15)

For me, it can be easy to forget how valuable I am. I sometimes look at celebrities, singers, rappers, or pro athletes and compare my worth to theirs. When I think of how much they have accomplished in life, I can look at my own life and feel insignificant. Especially with social media, it seems like the amount of influence something has is equal to how valuable it is. If you earn a certain amount of followers, likes, or subscribers then you are considered important.

This however is a big lie that we as a culture buy into everyday. The opposite is true in the kingdom of God. We are valuable because we are all children of God. We are valuable because Jesus came to earth, died on a cross, and purchased us with his life. We don’t have to earn it, or get lucky, or somehow be the one He chose by chance. It has already been done for us. It is a free gift we receive by faith.

God wants me to love myself the way that He created me. That means when I listen to Him instead of the lies of the world, I will be filled with more contentment, acceptance of my weaknesses, and love for myself. I need to stay focused on eternity and remember that my relationship with Christ is the most valuable possession in the world. It is the diamond that won’t decay, break, or lose its value over time. It is the eternal treasure and the ultimate prize.

The Bigger Picture: You are valuable, not because of how much money you have or how many likes/subscribes you get, but because of the free gift of eternal salvation that was purchased for you by the blood of Jesus.
