The Hero

Every story has a hero. From movies to books to video games, the spotlight always lands on the one who saves the day. Naturally, we want to put ourselves in that role in life. But when we try, we quickly realize we don’t have what it takes. We fall short. We make mistakes. The Bible says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

The truth is simple: Jesus is the hero, not us.

He is the one who rescues and redeems. He is the one who carries the burden we cannot. Scripture says He has “rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14). That is what heroes do, they save.

Our role is not to take His place but to point to Him. We are not the rescuer, we are the rescued. And that is good news, because His story never ends in defeat.

Today, when life feels overwhelming and you feel like you don’t have what it takes, remember, you don’t have to be the hero of your own story. The truth is that no one has what it takes. Our best efforts, our strongest deeds, even our most righteous deeds are not enough; they are like filthy rags in the sight of God (Isaiah 64:6). The only way to be truly rescued, forgiven, and redeemed from our sin is through faith in Jesus, the risen hero. So give your burdens over to Him because He is strong enough to handle it.

The Bigger Picture: We don’t have to be the hero of our own story because Jesus has already won the war.
