The Heist

The other night I was watching The Italian Job. It’s a classic heist movie where a team of people with different strengths works together to take back what was stolen. Mark Wahlberg, the main character, was the brains, one was the driver, one handled explosives, another was an expert at breaking into safes, and one was a genius tech hacker. Each person was different, but that’s what made them effective. They had a mission, a strategy, and they used their strengths to pull off something none of them could do alone.

In Joshua chapter 2, we meet Rahab, a prostitute living in Jericho, the fortified city that stood between Israel and the Promised Land. When two Israelite spies came to scout the land, Rahab hid them on her roof and protected them from the king’s soldiers. She told the spies, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us… for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below” (Joshua 2:9,11). Though she seemed insignificant in the eyes of the world, Rahab believed the stories of God’s power, and her faith moved her to risk everything.

Later, when Jericho’s walls fell, Rahab and her family were spared because she tied the scarlet cord in her window, just as the spies instructed (Joshua 6:22–23). Her faith not only saved her household but also put her into God’s bigger story. Rahab appears in the genealogy of Jesus Himself (Matthew 1:5). What looked like a small act of courage was actually part of God’s rescue plan, showing that He can use anyone, no matter their past, to pull off His mission.

What Rahab’s story shows me is that no role is too small and no past is too broken for God to use. It isn’t about having the perfect role, the loudest voice, or the biggest platform. It is about putting faith into action. She didn’t have a million followers or subscribers; she simply used what she had, right where she was.

Jesus has given us the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). That is our mission. The heist is to rob Hell of the souls the enemy blinds every day and bring them into the kingdom of light. Just like in The Italian Job, every believer has a part to play. Our faith, our obedience, however small it seems, can be part of His greatest mission. The question is, will you step into the heist?

The Bigger Picture: Jesus has recruited us for His ultimate heist, rescuing souls from darkness and bringing them into the kingdom of light.
